Duke University Rice Diet may have the word “rice” on its name, but surprisingly it has really little thing to do with rice. The diet was created by Walter Kempner from, naturally, Duke University and aimed at first to help people who have heart disease, diabetes, hypertension, and finally those who have obesity.

Duke University Rice Diet is not any ordinary diet program that you can do from the comfort of your home. There are two phases in Duke University Rice Diet. The first phase requires dieters to only eat grains and fruits. Dieters need to go through this phase under supervision of a nutritionist. Foods that need to be avoided are meat and dairy products. Dieters need to avoid these foods until their physicians allow them to. Yet, everyday we consume around 4 to 5 grams of salt. This means that there are around 3,5 to 4,5 grams of excessive salt in our body which can lead to hypertension and kidney disorder.
